Addiction is a disease! You lose your sense of what's right when that evil devil drug comes and steals everything good inside of you. Locking someone up will not teach them how to change their criminal and addictive behavior. I've been there, so I know. A person needs the opportunity to retrain their thinking once they are made to get clean (mine was through a drug court system). Once the dope was outta my system and the light in my eyes returned I was teachable, I was on my ... way to normal again. I am now 32 months clean after a 14 year addiction and because of the things I learned about my disease through counseling and cognitive behavior intervention I no longer have the DESIRE to ever use drugs again!!!! Prison does not offer that kind of help, as a matter of fact, there's more drugs in prison than you can ever imagine. So no, with all due respect, locking someone up is usually NOT the answer for addiction. Addicts do not mean to hurt those that love them but they do. It doesn't mean that we care any less for our loved ones, it simply means that an addicts disease controls them and that need for the next high over powers everything else!!!!! I mean everything!!!!!! We, as addicts, are labeled junkies and bad people. But that's simply not true. Addiction is forever, the monster inside of me is only asleep. It's my job to keep that monster sleeping by knowing what wakes it. Stay away from the people, the places, the things, the feelings and emotions that trigger your monster. You must learn how to deal with life in life's terms. Bad days will come so know that and know how to handle them without turning to drugs for comfort. Without awareness of your disease and just how cunning that monster can be, at some point you will awaken it and the insanity will begin. I respect the disease, and most importantly the fact is that I will do everything in my power to make sure I never wake the monster inside of me. God bless my fellow addicts, I pray for each of you.
